The resulting formation is fraught with violent unpredictable gravitational wavefronts. The phenomena, which can absorb energy, is extremely dangerous to spacecraft systems. |

 The Neutral Zone is a border region established by treaty after the Earth-Romulan Conflict that occurred in the mid-22nd century. Entry into the neutral zone by either side constitutes an act of war. There are a number of Earth Outposts established along the Neutral Zone sector Z-6 to monitor the Zone. No vessel broke the treaty until Stardate 1709, when a Romulan bird of prey crossed into Federation space and destroyed Earth Outposts 2, 3, 4 and 8. The bird of prey was subsequently destroyed by the U.S.S. Enterprise. (TOS: Balance of Terror)
