The neocortex is part of the humanoid brain. The reconfigured space created by the spheres in the Expanse disrupts Human and Vulcan neocortexes, which would be fatal after brief exposure. (|Postganglionic nerve|)
Julian Bashir mistook a preganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve during the oral section of the Starfleet Medical final exam. Had he not made the error, he would have been valedictorian, but instead he was salutatorian. (DS9: Q-Less) Editor's Note: These are nerve fibers that project from parasympathetic ganglia to synapses on target organs.

(|preganglionic fiber|)
Julian Bashir mistook a preganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve during the oral section of the Starfleet Medical final exam. Had he not made the error, he would have been valedictorian, but instead he was salutatorian. (DS9: Q-Less) Editor's Note: In the Autonomic Nervous System, fibers extending from the CNS to the ganglion are known as preganglionic fibers.
