IRC (Internet Relay Chat) provides a way of communicating in real time with people from all over the world. IRC supports group chats, but also privage messages.
It consists of various separate networks (or "nets") of IRC servers, machines that allow users to connect to IRC. Some of the largest nets are EFnet, Undernet, and DALnet, but ST Frontier Fleet uses a private network, called PBEMNET.
When and where are the STFF IRC meetings?
An IRC meeting is being held on PBEMNET in the channel #FF. Currently the time of these meetings is Saturday night 1800 (GMT/UTC, for other timezones: Click here; note: this link uses the current date, not the one of the next Saturday).
Chat transcripts were being created and sent to the IRC Logs list, but there currently is no LOGGER anymore.
PBEMNET Servers are:
irc.frontierfleet.com (Port: 6667, SSL: 6601)
lin.frontierfleet.com (Port: 6667, SSL: 6601) This server is BACK!!
Notes:
The PBEMNET servers are guaranteed to be active at the time of the meeting (Saturday 1600 GMT - Sunday 0600 GMT) although the PBEMNET operators try to have them online as long as possible.
Pirch - Some members have reported problems with Pirch showing more people than there actually are in the channel (can usually be solved by typing the command /names #channelname or /who #channelname
Trillian - Does not support Halfop (%) users, reported to show people who are not in the channel anymore (see Pirch for possible solution)
More info to be added later
A method you can always try, no matter what program you have:
Type /server 'server-address', for example: /server irc.frontierfleet.net
In most programs this is the command to connect to the server. Check the help or documentation for your program if /server does not work.
If you are connected to the server, type /join #FF to join the Frontier Fleet channel. This is a standard IRC command, so this should work in every IRC client.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some people have a @/%/+ in front of their name?
@: These people are channel operators or ops. They can remove people from channels, change channel options and they also can change the channel topic.
Only STFF COs and FOs (who registered their nickname with NickServ) will be made channel op when they join the channel. %: These people are channels half-ops. They can do almost the same things ops can, but they cannot kick ops, or change other people's op or half-op status. This mode is not supported by Trillian, which means you won't see the % (this doesn't change what the half-op can do).
Only STFF 2Os (with a registered nickname) will be made half-op automatically. +: These people have a voice. This allows people to chat in the channel when it is moderated.
The STFF chat is not moderated meaning that everyone can talk, so this is not used for this purpose. A voice is automatically given to any STFF member with a registered nickname though.
What are IrcOps?
The people who run the IRC servers, so Guido, Walter and Bram.
They can remove people from the network or give them a ban. These are also the people you should contact if you have a problem connecting to the network.
What is a bot?
In the STFF chat LOGGER is a bot. Bots are computer programs used for several things.
LOGGER creates a transcript of every chat and mails it to the IRC log mailinglist (see above).
How do I change my nickname
You can change your nickname on IRC without disconnecting and then reconnecting again. Use /nick newnick to change your nickname (where 'newnick' is the name you want to use)
How do I register my nickname?
Will be added later when the server is active (it's not right now) so I can check the NickServ help
You can also ask this question in the chat, because you have to be connected to IRC anyway to be able to register your nickname.
Do I need to register my nickname?
No, this is not required, but if you are command personnel, and you don't have a registered nick, you will not be able to get channel op or half-op.
