Duty shift sections aboard starfleet starships are:

0800 – 1600 -- Alpha Section
1600 – 2400 -- Beta Section
2400 – 0800 -- Gamma Section

Sections rotate by 8 hours every two weeks.

Department Heads, including the CO and FO are usually on the Alpha shift. The XO, is the FO's nighshift counterpart and hence usually has the Gamma shift. During times of emergencies, such as a Yellow or Red Alert situation, the CO, FO and Department Heads are called to the bridge.
