(|Beta Portolan system|)
The Beta Portolan star system was the location of ancient civilizations. According to archaeologists, they were the first star system destroyed by a patter of mass insanity, that followed an almost straight line through space. Lavinius V was the next victim, followed by Theta Cyngi XII and Ingraham B. There was no medical or scientific cause for what happened on those planets. Stardate 3287.2, the cause was determined: neural parasites that inflicted intense pain on humanoids. The parasites were destroyed at the last planet they attacked, Deneva. (TOS: Operation -- Annihilate!)
