 | Alpha Radiation | |
|---|
|
|---|
Alpha particles or alpha rays are a form of particle radiation which are highly ionizing and have low penetration. They consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle that is identical to the nucleus of a helium atom.
Alpha particles are emitted by radioactive nuclei such as uranium or radium in a process known as alpha decay. This can be accompanied by the emission of Gamma or Röntgen radiation.
Because of their large mass, alpha rays are easily absorbed by materials and can travel only a few centimeters in air. They can be absorbed by tissue paper or the outer layers of human skin (about 40 micrometres, equivalent to a few cells deep) and so are not generally dangerous to life unless the source is ingested or inhaled. Because of this high mass and strong absorption, however, if alpha radiation does enter the body, it is the most destructive form of ionizing radiation.

 | Antimatter radation | |

Antimatter Radiation is caused by an anti-matter containment faillure. Prolonged exposure is very dangerous, and can cause misformations of the body. Antimatter radiation can mask lifesigns. When the U.S.S. Voyager encountered a planet with its atmosphere filled with antimatter radiaton, they used their photon torpedoes to deliver a catalytic agent to produce an isolitic chain reaction, which neutralised the planet's radiaton. | Berthold Radiation | |
|---|
|
|---|
Berthold Rays are a form of deadly radiation that causes living animal tissue to disintegrate. Berthold rays were a recent discovery as of Stardate 3417.3, and their full nature was unknown. The breakdown of tissue does not develop immediately and limited exposure could be risked. There are no cures for berthold ray exposure. If you are exposed long enough, you die. (TOS: This Side of Paradise)
The planet Omicron Ceti III was bombared with berthold rays, but unfortunately the rays were not known to Federation science until 2267, after a few colonies had already been established on the planet and wiped out under unknown circumstances. The last colony, the Omicron colony of 2264, was protected by spores until those spores were destroyed by the actions of the U.S.S. Enterprise in 2267. The colony had to be relocated because living animal matter could only survive on Omicron Ceti III for a week without protection. (TOS: This Side of Paradise)

 | Beta Radiation | |
|---|
|
|---|
Beta particles are high-energy electrons emitted by certain types of radioactive nuclei such as potassium-40. The beta particles emitted are a form of ionizing radiation also known as beta rays. The production of beta particles is termed beta decay. They are designated by the greek letter Beta.
Beta particles can be stopped by a few mil (1/1000 in.) of aluminum and its flight is ten times farther than an alpha particle although it ionizes a tenth less than an alpha particle.

While inspecting a Class-J starship that was used to train cadets, Captain Christopher Pike was exposed to delta rays when one of the baffle plates ruptured. He was horribly disfigured from the exposure. (TOS: The Menagerie) Delta radiation can kill the organic components of Xindi phaser rifles, but the amounts required are hazardous. (ENT: The Shipment) Humans can suffer massive cellular disruption if subjected to intense delta radiation. (ENT: Daedalus) High levels of delta radiation can interfere with long-range scanners. (DS9: Battle Lines) Exposure to delta rays can also weaken metals such as viterium. (DS9: Valiant)
The warp engines of the ships of the Terran Empire's Starfleet in the Mirror Universe generate excessive delta radiation, which shorten the lives of engineers working with them by an estimated ten years per one year of exposure. (ENT: In a Mirror Darkly)

 | Gamma Radiation | |
|---|
|
|---|
Gamma rays (often denoted by the Greek letter gamma) are an energetic form of Electromagnetic radiation produced by radioactivity or other nuclear or subatomic processes.
Gamma rays are a form of ionizing radiation; they are more penetrating than either alpha or beta radiation (neither of which is electromagnetic radiation), but less ionizing.
Shielding for Gamma rays requires large amounts of mass. The material used for shielding takes into account that gamma rays are better absorbed by materials with high atomic number and high density. Also, the higher the energy of the gamma rays, the thicker the shielding required.
Gamma rays are less ionising than either alpha or beta rays. However, reducing danger requires thicker shielding. They produce damage similar to that caused by Röntgen radiation (X-rays), such as burns, cancer, and genetic mutations.
